RESUMO

In aquatic habitats, metal contamination from natural and anthropogenic sources continues to pose a concern for human and environmental health. Thus, it is important to complete monitoring studies to assess patterns and the extent of metal contamination in these ecosystems. The purpose of this work was to determine the concentrations of 31 chemical elements and water quality parameters of the Todos os Santos River located in the Mucuri Valley, Minas Gerais, Brazil. A multivariate statistical analysis was used to determine any seasonal and spatial patterns from the data. Results demonstrated that metals including Al, Fe, and Ni exceeded Brazilian and international guidelines nutrients as P also exceed water quality standards. Principal components analysis indicated distinct geographical and seasonal patterns for multiple elements with hierarchical cluster analysis confirming the observed spatial patterns of contamination in the Todos os Santos River.

RESUMO

The authenticity and composition of commercial essential oils requires strict quality control. Due to the importance of α-pinene containing essential oils, a rapid and efficient method for quantification of this terpene in oils of eucalyptus, pink pepper and turpentine using (1)H NMR was developed and validated. All evaluated parameters (selectivity, linearity, accuracy/precision, repeatability, robustness, stability of analyte and internal standard in solutions) showed satisfactory results. The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) were 0.1 and 2.5mg respectively. These values indicated that α-pinene was detected in 35 mg samples containing at least 0.3% of this compound. In addition, a minimum of 8% of α-pinene in the sample was required for quantification. Furthermore, the standard deviations found in the (1)H NMR methodology were less than 1% and were lower than those obtained by gas chromatographic analysis. Statistical tests have shown that the results obtained by (1)H NMR methodology are similar to those obtained by GC-FID technique using external and internal standardization and normalization within 95% confidence. R&R values lower than 10% have shown that all the methods are appropriate and the (1)H NMR method is suitable for quantification of α-pinene in samples of essential oils since this method possessed the smallest R&R (1.81) value.

RESUMO

Total nitrogen has been determined by using a model developed between the conventional chemical measurements and diffuse reflectance spectra in the near-infrared region. Samples (244) from different types of soils with total nitrogen contents ranging from 0.20 to 13.60% (m/m) were modeled by partial least-squares regression (PLS), multi-layer perceptron feed-forward networks (MLP) and radial basis function networks (RBFN). The RBFN model produced a better square error of prediction (SEP) of 0.048 and R(2) = 0.93 in a procedure that is simpler, faster and less dependent on the initial conditions.

RESUMO

Lipophilic wood extractives commonly referred to as pitch, cause significant problems for the pulp and paper industries. The reduction of these extractives is an important aspect that concerns industries around the world. In the present work the change in the amount and chemical composition of lipophilic extractives from Eucalyptus spp. stored for 20, 40, 60, 100, 140 and 180 days after harvesting was investigated. The results showed a decrease in extractives content with storage time, with the most significant decrease occurring 60 days after harvesting. In addition, fatty acids and sterols were the main classes of compounds responsible for the significant decrease in extractive content. Data were analyzed by principal component analysis. PC1 explains approximately 99% of the total variance, and beta-sitosterol was the major compound responsible for the differentiation. These studies demonstrate that in terms of economical aspects, quality of the pulp and paper and minimization of pitch formation, the best period of wood storage is 60 days.
